A Rocket Catastrophe, Miniature Stomachs, And A Seriously Smelly Comet
An unmanned Antares rocket, built by private space outfit Orbital Sciences and powered by refurbished Soviet engines from the 1960s, explosively failed to launch on its planned resupply mission to the International Space Station. Researchers found and positively identified a part from Amelia Earhart's plane—a piece of aluminum recovered from an uninhabited south Pacific atoll. Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko smells like a combination of formaldehyde, rotten eggs, a dirty horse stable, vinegar, and bitter almonds...[Read More]

The World Science Festival, in collaboration with the Museum of the Moving Image, invites you to a special program including a preview screening of The Imitation Game, Wednesday, November 19 at 6:30PM.

The film chronicles the life of mathematician and cryptanalyst Alan Turing, whose work during WW II is credited with cracking Germany's increasingly complex Enigma machine codes. He went on to become one of the most important pioneers of modern computing, but his intellectual triumphs did not spare him from tragedy in his personal life.

Benedict Cumberbatch portrays Alan Turing; Keira Knightley co-stars.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with the film's screenwriter Graham Moore, along with physicist and author Janna Levin (A Madman Dreams of Turing Machines). Journalist Faith Salie is the moderator.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students.

World Science Festival's "Science and Story" series gathers the world's foremost writers and thinkers to discuss how they craft stories that bring the vitality and wonder of science to life.

This program is supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation as part of its Public Understanding of Science and Technology Initiative.

Physics 5 minute competition

Student Last Name________First Name________Section

Physics 5 minute competition:
Write down different Physics formulas which, from Mathematics point of view, are similar to an expression:
a = ½ b c2
where a, b, and c are symbols of some physics parameters.
Write down for the each symbol also: what does this symbol mean; which Physics parameter represents this symbol?
Winner is student which wrote down maximum number of different and correct formulas of this type: a=½bc2
□ = ½□ □2
□ = ½□ □2

Newton's third law

Newton's third law

An electric force acts on a charged particle in an electric field. It is action.
Does reaction is the force which acts on the electric field from the charged particle?

The charged particle accelerates because of the action.
What does the electric-field do because of the reaction?

Problems

1. Suppose you and a pair of life preserves are floating down a swift river, as shown. You wish to get to either of the life preservers for safety. On is 3 meters downstream from you and the other is 3 meters upstream from you. Which can you swim to in the shortest time?
a) The preserver upstream.
b) The preserver downstream.
c) Both require the same time.

2. An airplane makes a straight back-and-forth round trip, always at the same airspeed, between two cities. If it encounters a mild steady tailwind going, and the same steady headwind returning, will the round trip take more, less, or the same time as with no wind?
